Transparent methodology
What the result includes—and what it does not
Built for advertisers and performance marketers who have campaign spend, click, and conversion totals and want cost per click, conversion rate, and cost per conversion from them.
Calculation method
- 1Cost per click = campaign spend ÷ clicks.
- 2Conversion rate = conversions ÷ clicks, shown as a percentage rounded to at most two decimal places.
- 3Cost per acquisition, also called cost per conversion, = campaign spend ÷ conversions.
- 4When conversions are zero the acquisition cost is shown as a dash rather than a number, because there is no finite result to divide to.
Assumptions and limits
- Spend, clicks, and conversions must all cover the same date range, campaign scope, currency, and attribution settings, or the three results describe different things.
- Only those three figures are used. Impressions, click-through rate, revenue, order value, and return on ad spend are not part of this calculation, and no advertising account is connected.
- The calculator rejects a conversion count higher than the click count. Ad platforms can report a conversion rate above 100% when one click produces several conversions, so those totals cannot be entered as-is.
- The output describes averages already contained in the totals you entered. It does not forecast auction prices, bids, or future performance.
Worked example
$1,000 campaign with 800 clicks and 32 conversions
Input: $1,000 spend, 800 clicks, and 32 conversions — the values the tool loads by default.
Output: $1.25 cost per click, 4% conversion rate, and $31.25 cost per acquisition.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate cost per conversion?
Divide total campaign spend by the number of conversions. At $1,000 spend and 32 conversions the cost per conversion is $31.25.
Is cost per conversion the same as cost per acquisition (CPA)?
They are two names for the same figure: spend divided by conversions. Google Ads reports it as average CPA and defines it as the total cost of conversions divided by the total number of conversions.
What is the difference between cost per click and cost per conversion?
Cost per click is what you pay for a visit, spend divided by clicks. Cost per conversion is what you pay for a result, spend divided by conversions. The gap between them is set by your conversion rate.
Why does the cost per acquisition show a dash?
Because you entered zero conversions, and spend divided by zero has no finite value. Enter at least one conversion to get a number.
Can I enter more conversions than clicks?
No — the calculator rejects it. Ad platforms can legitimately report more conversions than clicks when one click leads to several, and there is no honest way to enter that here: reporting a lower conversion count would misstate your results. Divide spend by conversions yourself for that case, or switch the platform to counting one conversion per click.
What is a good cost per conversion?
There is no universal benchmark; it depends entirely on what a conversion is worth to you. Compare the figure this tool returns against your gross profit per conversion — if the cost exceeds it, the campaign is losing money at that margin.
